CyanogenMod 14.1 nightlies bring Android 7.1 Nougat for the Nexus 5, Moto X Pure Edition and more

Image
CyanogenMod is virtually the best-known custom ROM out there, and for good reason: it brings the newest version of Android to devices that would otherwise have to wait much longer to receive it, or would never receive it at all. This week, quite a few popular devices have received CyanogenMod 14.1, which is based on Android 7.1 Nougat. CyanogenMod 14.1 (Android 7.1 nightlies): Google Nexus 5 (hammerhead) LG G Pad 7 LTE (v410) Motorola Moto X Pure Edition (2015) (clark) Nextbit Robin (ether) Oppo R5/R5s (Intl) (r5) Oppo R7 Plus (r7plus) Enthusiasts who still own the Nexus 5, of which there are many, will no doubt be thrilled to see Android 7.1 Nougat come to their devices (though it did arrive  in CAF form  late last month). The Moto X Pure and Nextbit Robin are also popular choices for Android addicts, so it's nice to see CM14.1 builds for those up. However, it is worth noting that the Moto X Pure build isn't fully functional; I flashed the December 2nd buil

‘Night mode’ (eye strain reduction) could make a return on Nexus devices

Image
Nexus 6P users who were miffed to find Night Mode removed when they installed the Android 7.1 Nougat OS update might have received an optimistic hint from Google of its eventual return. Night Mode acts as a blue light filter that helps reduce eye strain when looking at your phone late at night, and can be set to turn on automatically at sundown. Once Nexus users realized Night Mode had been removed, some of the more snarky users resorted to reporting the lack of Night Mode in the latest Nougat release as a bug. Curiously, one such report has been closed with its status set to "FutureRelease". Without an official statement or blog post confirming its eventual return, it's still unclear exactly what this report status means. But it could be an encouraging sign that it might eventually make a return to Nexus devices. Night Mode as part of the Nougat OS is currently exclusively available on Pixel and Pixel XL devices, found in the Display settings and referred to as N

Google Pixel, Pixel XL launched: Price, specifications, features

Image
The rumor mills can now take a break as Google has finally taken the wraps off its Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones at the ongoing event in San Francisco. With today’s launch, the Nexus lineup is officially dead, and the Pixel lineup is quintessentially Google. Though manufactured by HTC, both smartphones feature the ‘G’ logo and are touted as ‘Made by Google’. The overall design and looks are in line with what has leaked before. Unlike before, both the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones look and feel the same, and they are only differentiated on the basis of size. With the new Pixel smartphones, Google isn’t involved in the specifications race like the other Android companies. Instead, the company is following Apple’s rulebook by taking control over both the hardware and software part of the Pixel smartphones. But the question is, can it be as successful? Google is now using the new smartphones to show-off what its software and services are capable of. Unlike Nexus, the Pixel sma

Google Pixel and Pixel XL will replace Google's 2016 Nexus flagship

Image
Speaking to two independent sources, we now strongly believe that Google's formerly-maybe-Nexus-phones, Marlin and Sailfish, will be marketed as the Pixel and the Pixel XL. We do not have pricing information. At this time, it is unknown to us when Google decided to shift its in-house smartphone brand from Nexus to Pixel or why (though speculation will likely run wild). The Pixel will be the 5" Sailfish device, while Pixel XL will be the 5.5" Marlin. As to our confidence in this information: given that our two sources are independent, and the fact that one in particular has been exceptionally reliable in the past, we feel comfortable saying you can take this to the bank. Coupled with Android Central's breaking story on Tuesday that the phones would not be branded as Nexuses - what else could they even be branded as? Some will say that Marlin and Sailfish's specifications and HTC manufacture don't live up to the "premium" image that the Pix

Google code shows Android N tested on the Nexus 5

Image
Surprising everyone in the morning, Google today released the first Android N developer preview. While the developer preview is now available for download for the newly launched Nexus smartphones and tablets, it is not available for LG Nexus 5 (one of the most popular Nexus smartphones.)  The reason why Google didn’t release the Android N developer preview for the Nexus 5 is because it is too old now and has passed Google’s time frame for major Android updates. But it appears like Google might bring Android N to Nexus 5. A few digging in Google’s Git repositories revealed that Google is currently testing Android N developer preview for the Nexus 5 smartphone. You can check that here. Android N for Nexus 5 As you can see in the AOSP repositories, the Nexus 5 (hammerhead) is tagged with Android N Preview 1 and that is also Yesterday (March 9th). While Google is yet to make things official, but if it works then we might see Android N on Nexus 5 too.

Image
It appears like Google might start rolling out the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for Nexus devices starting October 5, as revealed by Canadian wireless carrier Telus. Google usually ships new version of Android Operating System on its new Nexus devices, so the company might also start shipping the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P at the same time frame too. Not only Telus, many other reports and rumors also pointed towards October 5 release date for the Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update. Google is expected to unveil the new LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P on September 29th. So, we will get the confirmation for the Android Marshmallow Update on the same date.

CyanogenMod Rolls Out Android 5.0 Lollipop To The Google Nexus 7 LTE 2013 Before Google

Image
A lot of people will be sick by now of hearing about Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Chances are though, the people who are sick of hearing about it, probably fall into one of two camps. Those who don’t know or care about Lollipop and those who already have Lollipop on their devices. For all those still waiting, it is probably safe to assume they do care. What’s more, those who are waiting are probably starting to get itchy feet over the last few days, as we are now approaching the middle of January, which was round about when most OEMs promised Lollipop will start rolling out to their devices. Remember all the ‘ninety-day’ promises?                                                Well, one set of users who are probably itchier than anyone else are owners of the Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013). This is because they have a Nexus device. Firstly, Nexus devices are pretty much considered to have a golden ticket when it comes to Lollipop updates and are expected to receive their updates before anyo

Nexus 5 users facing problems after updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop

Image
Several Nexus 5 users are complaining about bugs in the software, poor battery life, and Wi-Fi issues after they updated their phones to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Last month, Google started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop update, which brought many new features, and also a complete new graphical overhaul with a new design language called Material Design. Several sophisticated security features are also been introduced. But it looks like that Google has not tested the new update before rolling it out as many users are facing numerous issues. We all know how famous the Nexus 5 was for its short battery life and the new update has shortened it further. Several users have complained about massive battery drains. Installing the latest version of Google PlayStore (v6.5) will supposedly fix the battery drain issue. Many of them also reported issues including the device excessively heating up, and Wi-Fi causing a battery drain among others. Though these issues aren’t affecting all the Nexu

Google Nexus 6 Vs. Moto X 2014: Which One Is The Best Smartphone?

Image
Until the launch of Nexus 6, Moto X 2014 was most probably holding the crown for the best smartphone for sale this year. But now, the crown seems to be in danger by the launch of Google Nexus 6. So get ready to find out the best smartphone out of the two. Nexus 6 is similar to Moto X 2014. It is so due to the fact the Nexus 6 is manufactured by Motorola itself, so the company didn’t completely go back to the drawing board for the Nexus 6. But it doesn’t mean Nexus 6 is a ditto of Moto X 2014, it can be rightly called a bigger and more powerful brother of Moto X as it has a larger screen. So, let’s find out the differences between the two smartphones.  Screen and Design The Moto X holds a 5.2-inch full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 424ppi. The display holds a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top, while the Nexus 6 has a bigger 5.96-inch full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 493ppi and it also has a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the screen.
