Lenovo and Motorola have just teased a device announcement for Mobile World Congress next month, as they have just sent out an invite of sorts telling press to “save the date” for their upcoming press conference that is set to happen on February 26th. Although they don’t give much detail in the way of words, they do mention that it will be happening at 4:30PM local time in Barcelona, and those minor time and date details do come along with a picture that shows off the a rendered image of a smartphone so it’s likely that they will have a phone to show off at the event. This isn’t a direct confirmation, but it might as well be as this is about as close to a confirmation as it will get until Lenovo actually unveils something next month. Since the Moto Z family is still fairly new it’s a safe bet that what Lenovo and the Moto team have to show off will have nothing to do with this particular device series. Mobile World Congress is close to the time frame that the Moto G4 family of

Motorola is promising at least 12 new Moto Mods each year

Image
Motorola's latest Moto Z flagship phones are modular, designed to accommodate add-on modules that snap to the back of their cases for extra battery life, more complex camera modules, pico projectors, et cetera. Critical and consumer response to the change has been mixed, as it was for LG's modular G5 designs. But in a recent meeting with technology journalists, the Lenovo subsidiary doubled down on the modular approach. Motorola committed to at least 12 new Moto Mod add-on products per year. That's according to a report from Cnet, which says that Lenovo's Moto Mods director John Touvannas specifically wants to release more modular accessories in 2017 than the company has this year. That includes licensed designs from third parties, which are already available from partners like Hasselblad and JBL. If that's not enough, Motorola has an upcoming partnership with crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to solicit ideas and offer free Moto Z phones and Moto Mod developer

CyanogenMod 14.1 nightlies bring Android 7.1 Nougat for the Nexus 5, Moto X Pure Edition and more

Image
CyanogenMod is virtually the best-known custom ROM out there, and for good reason: it brings the newest version of Android to devices that would otherwise have to wait much longer to receive it, or would never receive it at all. This week, quite a few popular devices have received CyanogenMod 14.1, which is based on Android 7.1 Nougat. CyanogenMod 14.1 (Android 7.1 nightlies): Google Nexus 5 (hammerhead) LG G Pad 7 LTE (v410) Motorola Moto X Pure Edition (2015) (clark) Nextbit Robin (ether) Oppo R5/R5s (Intl) (r5) Oppo R7 Plus (r7plus) Enthusiasts who still own the Nexus 5, of which there are many, will no doubt be thrilled to see Android 7.1 Nougat come to their devices (though it did arrive  in CAF form  late last month). The Moto X Pure and Nextbit Robin are also popular choices for Android addicts, so it's nice to see CM14.1 builds for those up. However, it is worth noting that the Moto X Pure build isn't fully functional; I flashed the December 2nd buil

This is how the Moto X (2017) might look like

Image
This year's flagship Motorola smartphones bear the Moto Z branding, foregoing the Moto X moniker from years past. However, this may not mean that the X line is dead at the now Lenovo-owned company. In fact, Motorola claimed the X series was "alive and well" back in June, and it looks like that may extend well into 2017. What you see in the leaked hands-on images below is alleged to be the Moto X (2017), a successor of sorts for the Moto X Style from last year. It's almost certainly going to be slotted in Motorola's portfolio right under the flagship Moto Z, so it's an upper-midrange handset. That said, no specs have leaked for it, so unfortunately we don't know anything about its innards just yet. What we can tell from the pictures is that it will (at least) come in gold, with a metal frame or a fully metallic construction (it's tough to tell which from these shots alone), a fingerprint scanner on the front, and a rear camera with a

Lenovo said to use only 'Moto' branding on all future phones

Image
As rumored earlier, Lenovo is ditching its own brand for all future handsets. Instead, it will be using "Moto" as its only brand for future. The reports also says that the Company is replacing Xudong Chen as co-president and SVP of Lenovo’s Mobile Business Group in China, with Gina Qiao, formerly SVP of human resources.   And it would also mean we won't see "Vibe" or "Phab" phones in the future. Everything might turn into Moto G, E, Z and so on.
