WhatsApp starts rolling out video calling feature

Image
hatsApp has finally started rolling out the much-awaited video calling feature to its users. However, so far the update is only available for Windows Phone users. The feature, as per multiple reports, comes enabled by default as a part of an update to the v2.16.260 WhatsApp Beta. To make a video call, users simply need to click on the calling button and choose between 'Voice' and 'Video' calling options. The option also allows users to change from front camera to rear camera and mute the call. In addition, users would get notified when they miss a call. To call back, they can tap on the same menu. It has not been mentioned when the particular feature would reach Android or iOS apps. However, given its launch on the Windows Phone, we can assume that it might reach Android and iOS platforms soon.

WhatsApp: Why we love and hate the popular messaging service

Image
The advent of the instant messaging app on smartphones has completely revolutionised the way we communicate. Here are some ways how it has come about: The benefits... 1. Wishing on festivals and special days used to cost a bomb with telcos charging standard SMS and call rates on those days. With WhatsApp, we do not have to care for the rates any more 2. Standard smileys were common in SMS language, but WhatsApp emojis have rendered some words unnecessary. An emoji of two beer mugs clunking does a better job than 'Cheers!' 3. Earlier, sharing pictures instantly meant mailing them, putting them up on Facebook or sending through an MMS. Now, you can just click and share in no time. 4. We actually used to ring the doorbell to our friend's house and then we took to calling them. Now we WhatsApp them that we're waiting outside. 5. Earlier you had to try hard to avoid a group of people in chat — now you can set a lot of them on permanent mute. ...and the drawbacks 1. As

Around 11PM last night, we got a surprise call from WhatsApps’s Neeraj Arora. It wasn’t any ordinary call but one he made from within WhatsApp. So far we had only heard about the feature, which was promised a year ago and started trickling out to some select users as a part of a beta test. And here we were, talking to Arora, who casually teased us – “I called to check the audio quality. What do you think?” Last year we had bumped into WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum as both of us headed out of Barcelona after attending MWC. During the interaction, Koum shared with  BGR India his vision of how WhatsApp would become the primary communication service after it launches a much asked for voice calling feature. It took a little longer than anticipated but WhatsApp Call is now around the corner. Earlier this week word spread about some users being able to access WhatsApp Call feature. WhatsApp had then confirmed to  BGR India  that it was beta testing the service and would soon launch it once
