Nova Launcher Beta Update Brings Nougat-Styled Launcher Shortcuts

Image
The latest beta version of the highly popular Nova Launcher for Android is rolling out in the Google Play Store. Beta testers who also have Android 7.1 Nougat installed are supposed to have support for the operating system’s new app shortcuts feature. We say “supposed to” because, according to Droid Life, the new apps shortcut feature for the Nova Launcher beta does not work on Google’s new Pixel phones, but apparently does work for other phones that have Android 7.1 installed. Keep in mind this is a beta and that means bugs will be found and, hopefully, squashed before the final version is released. The new beta of the Nova Launcher also has a backport of some Android 7.1 launcher shortcuts to Android 5.1 and 6.0. It also allows users to display weather in the Google Search bar.  Finally, this new version brings some unnamed “fixes and optimizations”. Interested in becoming a beta tester? Outlook.com Email Receiving Apps

Image
Microsoft will launch applications on its Outlook.com email service. The company is expected to show some apps and add-ins for Outlook.com this week and some of the sessions at Build 2015 deal with the software. Apps and add-ins are currently only available for the Office 365 version of Outlook. Developers will soon be able to make an application that runs on Outlook for desktop, Office 365, and Outlook.com. A single store for these apps would be used across platforms. Since apps are limited right now, most of the ones that exist are for the enterprise, not regular users. The apps for Outlook move is part of a larger decision at Microsoft to turn Office into a platform.

Image
Google has started rolling out an update for its Maps app for Android, bringing a new feature named Local Guides. The feature, as a part of Google Maps version 9.4, gives users a better idea about places based on reviews by others. First spotted by 9to5Google, the Local Guides feature, previously known as City Experts, takes reviews for local businesses from regular users and share it with others using the Google Maps app. The feature highlights the top reviewers, similar to Yelp's Elite Reviewers, and also awards a Local Guides badge to signed-up reviewers once they reach 50 reviews. Regular users can also add images and edit Maps on Google to provide better information to others. "Through Local Guides, an official Google program, you can share your firsthand local experiences, celebrate places near and far from home, connect with a global community of explorers like you, and help local businesses improve their products and services," said the Local Guides official
